New Thing

There are new things in our little country life!

First new: Laurayne "Isabelle" Lowe was born on December 4, 2012. I never understood... well, anything about how this would feel. We are totally and completely in love with this little girl. She is smiley, cute, determined, feisty, beautiful, smart, strong... you get the idea. Tim and I understand now how it feels to be blessed beyond measure: mind-blowing.

Another new: Tim graduated with his Master's degree! And with flying colors: 4.0!!! I always knew I married an incredibly smart man. While grades do not always reflect intelligence, grades do reflect effort and hard work. Tim had a full plate with two jobs, a family, and school, and he conquered it. I'm so proud of him!

Last new: Tim will be a professor in the fall! Did you catch that? P-r-o-f-e-s-s-o-r. Never in a million years did I think TIM would be a professor. But he's going to be GREAT at it! He'll be the biomechanics lab instructor for 4 classes this fall at UT Tyler.

As for me, well, nothing new is probably a good thing in my line of work. I'm enjoying being a mom, wishing I could be home more, and trying to soak up every minute with my little girl. In the meantime, I'm trying to work off all of those pounds I put on carrying the little snuggler! It's a slow process, but we'll get there.

We're loving the country living. It'll be hard when we have to be grown ups and buy our own place! God has always provided, so I'm not worried. It will be just right at just the right time.

That's your "New Thing" update from the Lowe's! More to come soon!

Love,

L

Catching Up

Well, I've been gone too long, it seems. The blog site has changed its format, so all of my picture reels are gone, all of the links, etc... I guess that's what I get for being absent! Oh well, I'll pause for a moment to catch you all up on what's been happening in the last 2 years, then later I'll fix what I can on the blog.

We've now been living in Tyler, TX for about a year and a half. I took a job as the East Texas Regional Director for U.S. Senator John Cornyn, and Tim finally has had the opportunity to work on a Master's degree.

Tim has definitely worked hard in the last year and a half, working full time and taking full loads and still maintaining a 4.0 average. He's really enjoying his studies and is eagerly anticipating the next step in his career. Tim currently works for APEC in Tyler, a sports training facility for athletes of all ages, as well as at UT Tyler as a graduate research assistant. He will graduate with a Master's in Health Science and Kinesiology in May 2013.

We adopted a precious lab mix named Remington last year, and he's been a great companion for Molly, even if he's been somewhat of an annoyance to her at times. He's beautiful. Just wait! You'll see... when I get around to posting a picture or two. (We all know how "johnny-on-the-spot" I am with these things, so.... it could be a while :).

We found a church community that we absolutely love and have gotten plugged into a few groups. And slowly, but surely, we're starting to settle in to the new "hometown." It takes time, we know, but it's easy to be impatient.

This year has not been without its trials. Last November/December, we were thrilled to discover I was pregnant, even if it did happen on the backside of a terrible ankle sprain (funny, but long, story). We waited for 11 weeks to tell friends, though family knew around 8-9 weeks.

On January 23, 2012, I told my boss and we started telling friends about our little one. But on January 24, 2012 at 4:50 in the morning, we lost the baby in a miscarriage. We were 11 weeks and 2 days along, and we were devastated.

I have to pause and say that I can't explain to someone who's never lost a child in this manner how it feels. The way we talk about miscarriage today, because it is so common, tends to diminish the true weight of what's happened. I realize well-meaning friends only want to convey that there is nothing wrong with you when you have a miscarriage, so they will say things like, "It's so common," or "Don't worry, this happens all the time." While I understand and appreciate the intent, the loss is so incredibly personal that their words really offered little to no comfort.

As it was happening, I apologized and apologized to Tim, as if I could control what was happening.  He was so sweet and so strong through it all. Though somewhat traumatic, I got to see my baby that day, and I quickly saved him or her for burial. I now am confident enough to say that after seeing my child, I am completely and 100% for mandatory ultrasounds for women contemplating abortion. If they knew and got to see that it truly IS a living being inside of them, not a mass of cells, or a bunch of tissue, or the ever-elusive "fetus," I am convinced that many more women would choose to let that sweet child live. I could hop on a soap box here, but I won't.

That afternoon, I had a DNC procedure to clean out the remaining tissue so as to prevent infection. The surgery was quick and painless, but my trip to the hospital included a visit to the ER after I passed out in admissions. The staff was kind, and I was fortunate that an ER nurse started my IV (they are PRO's at it...seriously). My doctor was great as well - which, as an aside, her daughter broke her leg that day only adding to the craziness of her world. I was so grateful for her.

Ultimately, what helped me get through it all was the sense of God's presence, the strength of my husband, and the love of my family. As I was miscarrying my baby, the song, "10,000 Reasons" played over and over and over in my head. Tim had "I Surrender All" running through his head. I felt a whisper tell me that the timing just wasn't right, and I knew that the Lord was sovereign. Tim never left my side, and my parents as well as my brother and sister-in-law came to our house to cook and take care of us as we grieved. My bosses were incredible, telling me to take what time I needed and sending me beautiful bouquets of flowers. I felt very safe and very loved.

My family owns just shy of 500 acres in a small county north of where we live. That weekend, we placed our baby in a small box my dad bought for us and buried our child on my family's property. It was the first funeral my dad had performed, and it was his grandchild. Tough as it was, the closure was very helpful in the healing process. We planted a knockout rosebush at the site of the grave and plan to later plant a tree on the land in memory of our first child.

As I read over what I've written, it all seems very sterile to me. Literally some of the worst writing I think I've ever produced. However, it's the first time I've written the story and made it public. Though many of our friends know, not all do. It's the first time I've been able to write about it and not feel completely weird about it. God IS sovereign, and one day I know we will get to meet our little one. I imagine him or her up there, with my grandfather teaching the "Oh the cow kicked Nelly..." song, or Darrell Holt teaching what jazz really is meant to sound like, or Tim's grandmother teaching all of the hymns. My precious baby gets to experience pure joy without any of the heartaches and hardships of this world, and for that I am truly grateful.

"Though sorrow may last for a night, His joy comes in the morning..."

In March, much sooner than we thought,  we discovered we were pregnant again! This time, we waited almost 13 weeks to tell friends, though our parents knew at about 5 weeks. It was hard to get excited right away because the fear of losing another child was very real. We were afraid, plain and simple.  As days went by, and the pregnancy progressed, we began to breathe a little easier. I am happy to say that we are 29 weeks today and counting down until our little Isabelle joins us outside of the womb. It's not been without some random stresses like high WBC counts, low ferritin, and a high SD ratio, but I continue to rest in the peace that God is sovereign, whatever the outcome. I truly believe, though, that we are going to have a healthy and happy, sweet little baby girl (that much we know :) sometime around December 7th of this year.

In the meantime, we are preparing. Reading books, painting the room, and making the decisions that have to be made. I'll write another post at another time about how many new pressures come into play when a woman finds herself expecting. It's really quite exhausting and, in my opinion, WAY overdone. Nonetheless, we're looking forward to this next adventure with some trepidation and lots of excitement. I'll write about that too, but at another time. Hopefully, it will be much better writing that what I've produced in this post. Until then...

 Much Love,
 Louellen

Summer Thus Far

It has been quite the summer for Tim and I. It began with a trip to South Africa for Tim and a trip home (to Nacogdoches) for me. For three weeks, Tim played and served on a soccer team with Athletes in Action, a ministry that uses sports as a platform to share the Gospel. His time was spent helping with soccer clinics, playing in games, and sharing the love of Christ with not only South Africans, but also people from all over the world who had come to watch the World Cup games. He spent part of his time in Cape Town, and part of his time in Johannesburg helping local churches find inroads to their communities. In addition to their own testimonies, the players were able to share a DVD, The Prize- a short video compiling the testimonies of top soccer players Kaka, Lucio, and others. It was a trip full of divine appointments and growth opportunities for all involved.

When Tim returned, we spent the 4th of July with my family and took a trip to Galveston, both a great deal of fun for us. Afterward, we packed up what belongings we have with us and trekked 15 hours to Colorado for an extended visit with his parents. Recently, we returned from the Lowe Camping Trip 2010. To sum the trip up, it rained all three nights we were in tents, we hiked four fourteeners in five days (only three of which I summited), rafted, and fished. It was a wonderful trip!

Hope you enjoy learning about our adventures!

Homeless... well sorta

We packed up all of our belongings this week and have officially moved out of our apartment. All day on Saturday, I had thoughts like these: "We're going to be homeless!" "Are we doing the right thing?" "What are we doing?" "We're ridiculous." It was exhausting, and at the end of the day I was no further along in calming my anxiety. I'm not comfortable in this position at all, but the Lord has blessed us with a peace about the month of June. I don't have a peace about July yet, but I think it is because I still am holding out for an amazing job offer.

Tim has been great through all of this. And the Lord has blessed us tremendously in the process. It was hard to say goodbye to friends, but the hope is that one day we will see each other again. In the meantime, we wander. Aimless. And homeless. Well, sorta.

Our home is in heaven. I have to remember that on a constant basis. This earth is not my home. These things are not our things. Our home is in heaven, and we are just visitors passing through. So Lord, please show us how to be wise with the time you've given us, the opportunities you've granted, and help us to always have an eternal perspective. amen.

Catching Up with Life

Howdy! Well, it's been about a year or so since I've last posted, and I apologize for that. I found out that between school and life and being a wife, I don't have a lot of time for extra. The small stuff tends to go first- i.e. this blog.

But let me catch you up on what's been going on. We adopted a dog last year, her name is Molly. She is adorable with the most unique markings, and she has a great deal of character. We love having her as a part of the family.

I graduated last week with my master's degree. It is a bittersweet moment in many ways not just for me but also for Tim. For me, I have spent little time outside of a classroom until this point. Though I am looking forward to getting a job, and having a new routine, a part of my identity is gone and I feel a little lost. For Tim, he has finally found a group of guys that he enjoys hanging out with, and now we're leaving. For both of us, we have finally found our place in the church that we've been a part of for the better part of two years. Though the prospect of staying in College Station does not excite either of us, neither does the thought of leaving friends and loved ones.

At the moment, I do not have a job. The deal Tim and I struck was that I would go to school first, and then Tim would go back for his master's. I need a job to fulfill my end of that bargain, and he needs to finish applying. So for now, I'm loading up and moving to my parents' for June while Tim is on mission in South Africa, and then after that...who knows but the Lord? While I have a peace about our immediate plans, we have no idea where the Lord is leading next, and I have to wonder if this isn't what Abraham felt like (at least a little bit). We are literally loading all of our belongings into a pod next Tuesday to be stored until we know where we're going to end up. It's a little disconcerting, but I know that we'll be fine.

That very briefly sums the most important points. Now that I have graduated, I will attempt to keep up with this blog on a more regular basis.

Cheers,

Louellen

Update

Howdy all! It's been a while, I know. Tim and I have been living it up here in Texas. I'm almost finished with my first year of grad school! Only one to go... This summer, I will be completing an internship as part of my program; that is TBD. Let's put it this way: if I don't end up with an internship, I'll be spending my summer in Wisconsin learning Chinese. Whoop! We'll see what happens. God is sovereign, and He has a plan for this summer...His plans usually pop up only when they're needed- not months in advance like I plan. It happens.

Tim is doing VERY well in his job. He's been promoted several times and will be promoted a few more times very soon. The people at his work are soooo nice. We love hanging out with them- barbecuing, lounging, watching movies, laughing. The Lord has truly taken care of us in that way. He's a pretty lovable guy, but we hit the jackpot here.

I realize that's not super exciting, but that's life for us now. Oh! And we're only 2 months away from our one year anniversary. It's hard to believe, but we are so blessed! Thanks for listening in to our lives through this blog.

What we're up to...

I realized not long ago that we've posted nothing as to what we are up to now. Well, here's the rundown. Timothy and I moved to Texas after getting married so that I can get a master's in International Affairs. It is a two-year program, of which I have finished one semester, and will require a summer internship (TBD). Tim got a job at a plasma donation center here in town and is now a certified phlebotomist (spelling?). He has done well with several promotions in just a short amount of time.

We live in an apartment and hope to get a dog either this summer or next fall. We've been attending a church for about six months now and have joined a Sunday school class full of newly-weds like ourselves. We love it! I'm also singing in the choir and playing in the praise band; Tim is contemplating getting out his sax and joining the orchestra. We'll see!

Other than that, we are having a blast as newly-weds! I'll keep you posted on anything interesting that happens. Hasta luego, mis amigos!!
